Review: The Fault In Our Stars By: John Green

Goodreads SummaryDespite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten. (Goodreads Summary)

Review:
Let me just start off by saying, John Green is an amazing Author! He strings together words in such a beautiful and poetic way that I can't help but get lost in the labyrinth of his writing. He is so talented and I would love if I had at least half his talent! I really loved his book Looking For Alaska and so I couldn't wait to go to the bookstore and buy another one of his books. I ended up buying The Fault In Our Stars but I didn't read it until now. I kept putting it off because I just knew this story would be a tear-jerker and I wasn't in the mood to cry.

I finally picked up this book and I was not disappointed. I just loved Hazel's character! She's so funny, wise, confident; She's the full package! I also loved the first scene with Hazel and Gus and the cigarette's. I thought the metaphors were such a character quirk and made me love Augustus even more!

The Fault In Our Stars seems like a serious book about cancer but let me tell you, it is so much more than that! John made this book funny, thought-provoking, and instead of focusing on cancer, he focused on telling the amazing tale of these two star crossed lovers.

This book will have you laughing through your tears! I absolutely loved the humour in serious conversations just to keep everything light-hearted. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a meaningful YA novel. I'll be sure to give it a 4 star rating on Goodreads.

Review: Shatter Me By: Tahereh Mafi

Title: Shatter Me
Book: 1st in the Shatter Me Series
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Pages: 338
Rating:
Goodreads SummaryJuliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong colour.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior. (Goodreads Summary)

Review:
Shatter Me is a blunt, boring and very slow book. Shatter Me is an intense, dangerous and very romantic book. I couldn't even get half way through it! I couldn't put it down!

I loved the way Tahereh Mafi wrote this book! It was truly a very unique style. Shatter Me is written from the protagonist, Juliette's,  point of view. Throughout this book, Juliette crosses out certain sentences or words and replaces them with others. I loved this because it helped me get a deeper understanding of her character and also added to the reading experience. This book is also written in a very poetic way and although it did get a little annoying sometimes, it was very interesting to read.

I admit this book is a very cheesy, typical YA novel. It has an unconfident leading female who in reality is gorgeous, a bigger organization that tortures innocent's to gain power and eventually take over the world and of coarse, a love triangle. Even though this book was a cheesy YA novel, it didn't annoy me. Maybe because of how the story was written or maybe because this book is so captivating, but something about this book made me want to keep reading!

The only thing about this book that annoyed me and made me give it 4 stars instead of 5, was how perfectly everything worked out for Juliette. I mean, two guys, both handsome and completely obsessed with Juliette, are able to touch her while everyone else dies when they do. How convenient is that?

Besides that one point, I enjoyed this book a lot! It was beautifully written and I loved the metaphors! I'll definitely be reading the next book in this series! I recommend this book to anyone who likes romantic, dystopian YA novels and I'll be sure to give it a 4 star rating on Goodreads.

Happy Reading!

Review: Delirium By: Lauren Oliver

Title: Delirium
Contemporary/ Trilogy/ Series: Trilogy
Author: Lauren Oliver
Pages: 441
Rating: ✭✭
Goodreads Summary: Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't. (Goodreads Summary)

Review:
Delirium takes place in a dystopian U.S society where love has become a disease. To stop this disease, every 18 year old must go through with a neurological surgery to ensure that they are no longer capable of feeling love. Lena, the protagonist, firmly believes that love is a disease and can't wait to be cured, that is, until she meets Alex.

Lauren came up with an amazing plot line and this book has every element to be an exciting story but sadly, in my opinion, it isn't. I heard many great things about this book and I couldn't wait to read it! I love dystopian YA novels and I couldn't wait to see this story line unfold. I picked this book up from the library and began reading. I have to say, I was vey disappointed. This book is simply too long! I'm sure this plot would have made an amazing book, not so much a trilogy. Since this story is so stretched out, something had to fill the pages of the book and Lauren did that by repeating information over and over again, which I found very annoying! I kept reading, just waiting for something exciting to happen and I got through half the book before something exciting actually happened!

However, there are some things I liked about this story, one of those being characters. I loved how realistic Lauren made the character of Lena. Her personality fit perfectly with the situations she was put in. I also loved the quotes from  The Book of SHHH and other school books at the beginning of each chapter. I loved reading through these messages that have been drilled into the minds of the characters ever since they are children. It really helped me better understand this world that Lena lives in.

I may end up reading the rest of this trilogy but it's not high up on my TBR list. If you like reading slow romance novels, I recommend this book to you (I know many people who enjoyed it) but if you're looking for something a little more action-packed then I don't think you'll enjoy this book. I'll be giving this book a three star rating on Goodreads, though I wish I could have given it something a little higher.

Happy Reading!

Review: Allegiant By: Veronica Roth

Title: Allegiant
Book: 3rd in the Divergent Trilogy
Author: Veronica Roth
Pages: 526
Rating: ✭✭✭✭
Goodreads SummaryThe faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love. Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent. (Goodreads Summary)

Review:
Many people didn't like how this trilogy ended and I can see why but personally, I think this ending was perfect. A sad ending doesn't mean a bad ending! This book was realistic and heartbreakingly beautiful. Veronica chose a believable ending to this series and I really have to applaud her for taking a risk with an ending like that! I admit I did cry... A LOT...but that just shows how much personality Veronica gave to these characters. I am completely satisfied with this book and don't regret reading it for even a second (Ok, maybe I did for a second when my heart shattered into a million pieces, but that's beside's the point) I recommend the Divergent series to anyone who is looking for a dystopian YA trilogy. I'll be sure to be giving it a 5 star rating on Goodreads!

Happy Reading!

Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Title: Insurgent
Book: 2nd in the Divergent Trilogy
Author: Veronica Roth
Pages: 525
Rating: ✭✭✭✭
Goodreads SummaryOne choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so. (Goodreads Summary)

Review:
Insurgent is a great follow up to the book Divergent. I feel like there is so much more character development in this book. Throughout Insurgent, we learn more about the faction system, witness Tris and Four's relationship grow, are introduced to many new characters and end the book with quiet the cliffhanger.

I loved the way Veronica portrayed Tris in Insurgent. Tris has gone through some pretty traumatizing experiences and Veronica didn't sugar coat that. She allowed for those imperfections to show. Veronica showed that weak side of Tris and that's not something you see in many YA novels.

I definitely recommend this book if you loved Divergent and if you haven't yet read Divergent, I suggest you do that as well! I'll be sure to be giving this book a 5 star rating on Goodreads!

Happy Reading!
